SUMMARY
It is one hundred years since thè birth of Mar shall McLuhan the person who predicted the digital revolution and thè overwhelming influence of theè mass media, including the internet and thè iPhone, fifty years before they happened. In examining the main stages of his life and his multifaceted Works, we can see some elements that influenced his views and his enthusiasm regarding the mass media. Especiatty important were his engineering and literary background, and a/so his Catholicism, which seems to have had more than a little influence on his thought. The strong criticisms directed at his eclectic theory of mass media – some of which are justified, others more o fan ideological nature – have led to its premature decline. His prophetic inspiration ought to be re-evaluated, as well as his profound belief in the ability of human beings to adapt to changing social and techno-logical situations.
